Dan Cammish:
“I think it was a matter-of-fact rule. A camera says you’ve gone over track limits but what it doesn’t say is if the track is wet or dry. The fact is that I came around a number of times to find that a place that was dry had become wet, and I’m the first one to find this out being the leader. The other drivers have a chance to react, it’s so much easier to play follow the leader.
“The second race made up for this race one. I definitely had a point to prove, especially as I’d heard a few of the things that have been said and that I’ve read. A few of which I think were a little unfair, so I was out to prove a point and I think I did that.”
Daniel Cammish won round two at Brands Hatch but a track limit infringement in race one denied him a repeat of his 2015 double victory.
A five-second penalty was applied to the Leeds-based driver at the end of the first race, demoting him to second place in the results. Dan felt the penalty was harsh but channelled the energy into a commanding performance in race two, taking a clear victory by over six seconds.
Dan started both races from pole position, the first of which began with a rolling start. The race began on a greasy track, which evolved during the race as temperatures rose and more rubber went down. It was nevertheless a learning experience for the drivers as the race progressed. A collision at Graham Hill Bend early in the race brought out the Safety Car, neutralising Dan’s early lead, and resulted in slippery coolant being spilt over the track. It was at this point that Dan slid wide on the restart, resulting in his penalty.
Despite the penalty, Dan still secured a second-place finish to open his 2016 account. He was noticeably fired up for race two as he sought to rectify the situation. As the lights went out for the standing start to race two Dan was immediately on it and never looked back. He crossed the line 33 laps later to take his first victory of the year.
Dan now jointly leads the championship and heads to Silverstone next for rounds three and four on the 16th & 17th of April. The Carrera Cup will take leave from its regular place on the TOCA package and joins the ELMS and WEC around the Grand Prix circuit.
