Dan Cammish:
“Free practice was a disaster. Lechner does a fantastic job, and it is a great team, but we made some small errors on Friday in the free practice. That meant that we didn’t have any running on sensible tyres, which to be honest is where our weekend fell apart. At the time I didn’t think it was so bad but then you realise that in qualifying you don’t have the confidence in yourself or the car because you’ve not done enough laps on the better tyres. You underperform in qualifying, even when you had the speed for the front row, and you are always then going to be battling for the lower-end places.
“I think the last few starts have been made in warmer weather. I was completely caught out with how much grip there was, which was nil. I lit the rears up and went nowhere. I got passed by two people but to be honest, I thought I’d be passed by a lot more, so I presume other people got caught out by that as well.
“I drove my way back into fourth and caught third. I gave it everything but by that point, I’d used what I had underneath me. It’s my first year of racing abroad, I’ve spent my whole career learning British rules, and I’m now realising that in Supercup that track limits are blurred. As long as you didn’t go off in three places the rest of the track was free game.
“I’m learning all the time that you have to be more aggressive, more for yourself. I need to be more selfish from now on in this championship. If anything, I’m too clean, too kind, and really, I need to be quite dirty at times and be more like these guys.
“Hungary is going to be tough. Everyone is fast and it is hard to get an edge if there is an edge to be had. We’ve got a bit of work to do to find the extra speed We’ve had five races and finished four in the top four and an eighth, so we are a top-five driver and a top-five car and that’s where we need to be if we want to be in the championship at the end. My time will come and we’ll get some good results but I’m absolutely devastated that I wasn’t on the podium in my home race.”
