Dan Cammish:
“It was a disaster from my point of view. Basically, from the moment I was spun around in race one by Dan [Rowbottom], my weekend was over. Unfortunately, we don’t have a car that seems like it can come forward in those conditions. You get stuck in the pack, fighting people that are far too desperate to hold on to their 17th, 18th, whatever it might be, like their life depends on it. I ended up involved in more incidents and scrapes than I do in almost any time I go motor racing, but that’s what happens when you get spun back down the pack and you don’t have the ability to come through at the speed you need to. It’s tough and disappointing to have a car that can qualify P3, and you get bashed about for three races. It’s a disaster of a weekend with no points scored and my team-mate was in the top three in each race.
“It was noticeable in the last race how much we struggled when we were behind, but when I was on my own it was like all my problems had been cured, so that’s what we need to understand. I’ve had that before and I think everyone has an element of that, but I was shocked how much that played a part, but that also tells you not to be back there in the first place. I know how important qualifying is, because you start at the front, and you finish at the front. You start at the back these days and it’s not easy to come forward. The days of Ash coming through and when the weight used to make such a difference have gone. People don’t have that kind of performance anymore, people start 18th, and they only get to 12th.
“Saturday was positive, getting P3, only eighth hundredths off pole. If I would have been on pole it would have been different – it just shows you how important things can be. As much as I was happy with P3, another one or two places I wouldn’t have been involved in the incident I was in, around the guy I was around, who knocked me off in the first place. I’m happy that we’re making progress, but ultimately, my championship is completely over at this point. It’s only round three and I’m 98 points behind. My job now is to win as many races as possible for this team, try and catch up as much as I possibly can, but ultimately, if it comes to it, I’ll be there to try and help Ash. Even with fantastic weekends it’ll be well into the back end of the season before I can get anything like caught up.”
Dan Cammish endured a weekend to forget at Thruxton, as the British Touring Car Championship headed to the high-speed Hampshire venue for rounds seven, eight and nine of the season.
The NAPA Racing UK driver started well, finishing both practice sessions sixth quickest and was unlucky to miss out on pole position in qualifying, finishing 0.081s off the top spot and a miniscule 0.004s away from a front-row start, which may have changed the course of his weekend.
Falling behind Colin Turkington and team-mate Ash Sutton at the start, he took contact from Dan Rowbottom at the rapid Noble corner and spun off into the grass infield. Able to re-join the race, the Yorkshireman had to visit the pits to clean any debris and set about trying to make up as much ground as possible, having to settle for a dispiriting 25th position.
In the second contest he battled hard to move up to 18th, giving himself a shot at cracking the points in the final race of the weekend. Unfortunately, as he moved forwards and pulled alongside Aron Taylor-Smith at the chicane, he was turned into, spinning his Ford Focus ST off and down to 26th. Battling back once more, he could only get to 20th at the flag, capping a dismal day’s racing.
Dan will have to quickly rebound from this setback, as he travels to Oulton Park in two weeks’ time for more BTCC action, racing at the Cheshire venue over the weekend of June 11/12.
